Functional droplets with hydrogel and LC have been developed with a microfluidic method in in-situ and ex-situ ways. Instruments for microfluidics including puller, oxygen plasma generator, pressure controller, and optical microscope are ready to use. The reflected patterns of the assemblies of the small (tens micrometer diameter) LC droplets (and shells) have been studied to illuminate the origins of the extraordinary photonic properties which are quite different from those of the film. The uniformly-size hydrogel droplets were produced for biosensor applications with an in-situ UV curing method.
